More often than not, the trashcan is a neglected area when cleaning the home. Here are some tips on how you can avoid germs and grimy build up.

  • Lining your trashcan cuts down on the germ and bacteria build up.

  • Unlined wastebaskets should only be used for paper, tissue and other dry items. Never place food or any wet trash in an unlined wastebasket! ⠀

  • Paper and plastic bags from the grocery store are great and sustainable ways to line your wastebaskets and smaller trash cans! Just check to make sure there are no rips or holes. We recommend keeping a small stash of bags in your bedroom, office and bathrooms so you can easily replace. ⠀

  • Even a nice, thick, tight-fitting garbage bag can leak or split apart when it’s overfull. Taking out the trash every other day—or at least once a week—means you won’t have to wrestle massive dripping, stinking garbage bags out to the trashcan. ⠀⠀

  • Every so often, after you take out the trash snap on the rubber gloves and wipe down the can inside and out. We recommend using our favorite H2Orange spray and a microfiber cloth. When you’re done, dry all the surfaces thoroughly, especially inside. A damp wastebasket invites bacterial growth.

  • After you clean the wastebasket, clean the floor where it sits. If you keep it in the cupboard, don’t forget to wipe down the door and sides as well as the floor. This will kill the germs that have been transferred out of the wastebasket and into the sink.
