There's nothing worse than trying to get rid of a stain on a favorite top or pillow sham and making it worse in the process, right?! Before you launch into treating a tough stain, take a look at the following suggestions to make sure you do more good than harm.
Know: Read the garment’s care label for specific instructions and cautions.
Sample: Test in an unnoticeable place in case your technique has adverse effects.
Chill: Always rinse and soak stains in cold water – warm or hot water can set the stain.
Refrain: Never scrub stains, or risk spreading the stain and fraying fibers.
Confirm: Air-dry after laundering to be certain the stain is gone.
Preserve: Don’t put the garment in the dryer until the stain is completely removed. Heat from a dryer or iron will set the stain permanently.
Enlist: Wool, silk, other delicate fabrics and garments labeled “Dry Clean Only” should be turned over to the dry cleaner. Once you’ve worked on a stain unsuccessfully, the dry cleaner has less of a chance to get it out, so when in doubt, consult with a professional.
